A Grimes Summer Weekend Without Leaving Town

Five years ago, a Saturday in Grimes usually meant driving somewhere else for the interesting part. That has quietly stopped being true. Between Heritage Park's Saturday market, Friday concerts at the Community Complex, a rooftop dining room on E 1st Street, and a downtown revitalization plan the city started acting on this year, the shape of a Grimes weekend has changed. This is a look at how residents can string one together without crossing Beaver Avenue.

Saturday Morning Belongs to Heritage Park

Start at 1055 NE Beaverbrooke Blvd. The Grimes Farmers and Community Market runs Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon, and it is not the small handful of tables it started as at the library. Local reporting last summer put the vendor count at more than 60, spanning produce, baked goods, jewelry, and prepared food. That growth traces back to when new market directors moved the operation to Heritage Park a few years ago and gave it room to expand.

A few vendors worth looking for:

• Baldy's Best Hot Sauce, run by Johnston's Dustin Coy, sells ferments rather than the vinegar-forward bottles you see at most markets. His daughters run a bracelet table alongside.
• Rotating live music and food trucks show up most Saturdays through the summer.
• The market's own site describes it less as a shopping stop and more as a gathering spot, and on any given Saturday that reads as accurate.

If you have never treated it as a full morning rather than a quick errand, try it once. Coffee at Lightbrite or The Coffeesmith afterward is the natural follow-up, and both are in-town.

Why the City Keeps Pointing Everything Back at Heritage Park

Here is the thesis worth sitting with. Grimes is not just adding events at Heritage Park by coincidence. In 2025, the city, the Grimes Chamber & Economic Development office, and the Iowa Economic Development Authority completed a Downtown Assessment focused on the Governors District, the corridor that includes Heritage Park, the library, and the older commercial spine along 1st Street. IEDA delivered recommendations, and the city has been publishing what it has started and what comes next.

You can see the strategy playing out in programming. Heritage Park now hosts the Saturday market, free outdoor movie nights (activities at 6 p.m., film at 7 on a daylight-visible screen, per the city's community events page), and the Rock Around the Clock concert series on Friday nights during early summer. The city also awarded the North Sports Complex the Iowa Sports Field Managers Association Field of the Year, a small credential that says something about how the parks department is being resourced.

The Friday-Night Rhythm

Rock Around the Clock runs Fridays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Grimes Community Complex, with free-will donations going to Grimes Storehouse. That last part matters. A concert series most cities would treat as a parks-and-rec afterthought is instead a fundraising channel for the town's food pantry. It is also worth knowing that a resident who wants a Friday evening out has options within a five-minute drive.

The other Friday-adjacent standby is Destination Grille at 2491 E 1st Street. The rooftop terrace runs live music Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. through patio season, and the space converts to a heated, enclosed room in winter, which is why locals treat it as year-round rather than seasonal. OpenTable currently lists reservation availability into the late evening on Fridays and Saturdays, and the bars stay open until 11 on both floors those nights. The menu leans steaks, seafood, and pasta with an unusually broad gluten-free lineup for the metro.

None of those stops requires a drive to Merle Hay or downtown Des Moines. That is new.

The Everyday Backbone

The reason a Grimes weekend now holds together is that the errands and coffee stops finally hold together too.

The Hy-Vee at 351 NE Gateway Drive is the chain's first designated "smart store," a fact the Business Record covered when it opened. The 93,000-square-foot store includes DSW Shoes, Joe Fresh, W Nail Bar, a Johnson Fitness showroom, and a Food Hall with in-person and to-go dining. There are more than 170,000 electronic price tags in place of paper, and a 4,000-square-foot Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh sits at the southwest corner of the lot. Hy-Vee's leadership described Grimes as the store where the company would collect everything it had been testing elsewhere, which is a different sentence than "we opened a new grocery store."

Down the street, Caribou Coffee opened its 17th Iowa location at NE Gateway Drive and NE 10th Street in February 2025, per We Are Iowa's coverage. Hours run 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends, with a drive-thru and indoor/outdoor seating. It joined a Grimes coffee shortlist that already included Lightbrite and The Coffeesmith, both listed in the chamber's local business directory.

On the food side, the roster residents actually use is small enough to name:

• Rolling Wok Asian Cuisine & Pho at 3600 SE Crossroads Dr, Suite F. Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. The dining room is now fully open Saturday nights, per the restaurant's site.
• Hacienda Vieja at 200 SE Gateway Dr, Suite 106, for weekday lunches.
• Uptown Bar and Grill, Guesthouse Tavern & Oyster, The Happy Egg, Roots95, Pour Choices, and Tito's Lounge, all of which cycle through the Yelp and Tripadvisor rankings for the town.
• McAlister's Deli at 2080 E 1st St, on the newer commercial strip.

That list would have been half as long in 2020.

Governors Days Is Still the Anchor

The city's signature weekend remains Governors Days at the South Sports Complex, with concerts, a parade, carnival rides, a bags tournament, bingo, a pedal pull, and fireworks. Catch Des Moines listed the 2026 dates as June 4 through 6. Even for residents who skip the carnival, the parade is the closest thing Grimes has to a town-wide standing appointment, and it is the one weekend where seeing neighbors you have not seen in six months is the entire point.

Beyond June, the Heritage Park programming carries the calendar. The chamber's own event list points to Grimes on the Green in September, a Highway 141 Garage Sale August 7 through 8, and the Fall Festival at the South Sports Complex on October 3, followed by Trunk or Treat on October 25. If your household has kids, that October pairing tends to take care of the month.

What This Adds Up To

The reason to notice all of this is not that Grimes has more restaurants than it used to. It is that the city is deliberately concentrating public life in and around Heritage Park, and the private-sector openings, from the Hy-Vee smart store to Destination Grille's rooftop to the new Caribou, are showing up in the same corridor. For a town that spent years described as a bedroom community for Waukee and Johnston, that is a real change in daily life. It is also the kind of thing a resident feels before it shows up in any statistic.
